IN THE FIRE

50 people killed so far1. 200 missing. 125,000 acres and 7600 homes ravaged2. The wildfires in California are beyond frightful; they are devastating nightmares.

Thousands of lives—including celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Neil Young3— have been affected for the worst. People have lost everything; from treasured family heirlooms, to pictures, to expensive houses and cars. And it’s got me thinking.

In such an event, would you lose everything? I mean, everything that mattered to you?

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
(Matthew 6:19-21, ESV)

As we pray for the people literally going through a sort of hell on earth in the Campfire Fire, Woolsey Fire and Hill Fire, let’s remember the fragility of holding onto the material items in our lives for dear life– especially if they are getting in the way of a deeper relationship with Jesus. Those things can and will quickly disappear; but the things we do in putting Christ first will stay forever.

May the people affected by these fires come to know Jesus, and be given the resilience, strength and protection needed to go through such hard times.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10, ESV)
