Remembering a Hero: Kendrick Castillo

As I watched the screen, my heart plunged. My breathing grew heavy as I took in what I was hearing.

“At least 6 have been injured by two gunmen at Highland Ranch’s STEM school…”

In my own home state, yet another tragedy had taken place. Darkness seemed to have won.

But then, later, as this story unfolded, I heard about the one young man who sacrificed his life so that other students could live.

Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old from Colorado, jumped toward the gunmen so that his classmates could hide. He was shot in the process.

Whether or not he made a wise decision can be debated; but I want to honor this young man today, and pray over his family, his classmates, and everyone who has been affected by this darkness.

Because though it looks like the darkness has won, this young man’s sacrifice shows us that it indeed has not.

Love. Always. Wins.

John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Learn more about Jesus, who has done this for us, here.

“Dear Lord Jesus,
We thank You for being a God who has done away with sin and death, so that all those who believe in You might come to know You as Lord and Savior, and have eternal life with You. In this tragedy, dear Jesus, we pray now that Your Holy Spirit would comfort and bring these families and classmates to You. Please bring good out of such a horrible, horrible situation. We trust You Jesus.
In Your Name we pray,
Amen.”
