“For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper. He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy. He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood in His sight.”
(Psalm 72:12-14, NKJV)
Last night, the Lord had me read this scripture, and I was blown away by His Heart for those who cannot speak for themselves and for those who are living under poverty and oppression. His Heart is so tender and passionate about these people!
Honestly, I have not paid attention to the poor and needy like I used to. Being a person who barely makes enough money, I tend to throw all the nonprofit donation mail in the trash. And while I understand that God Loves a cheerful giver, I tend to grip too tightly to my money and resources at times.
But I have also been on the other side of the coin. Maybe I haven’t been the target of terrorists—which is a truly horrific, sad thing happening every day to others—but I have felt the weight of spiritual, mental, and emotional oppression, and I have been “him who has no helper.”
A scared, defenseless, confused young woman.
Jesus saw me in my defenseless state, and He redeemed my life, just as Psalm 72 says. That is perhaps why I feel so called to help those who are now in my same position, be it financially or otherwise.
The truth is, we have all been this oppressed, helpless person. Helpless to save ourselves, and helpless to get out from under the bondage and oppression of sin, as well as the oppression and pain we feel daily in this life.
Friends, I’m not going to guilt-trip you. But today, I encourage you to remember that valley Jesus has rescued you from—and that you would praise and thank Him for doing what only He could do.
And if you are led to give, I ask that you would go to my list of reputable charities helping those in Nigeria to see if you would like to donate to any of those charities. I have vetted them and looked at their ratings at Charity Navigator, and feel confident about each charity mentioned.
We have all been the defenseless and helpless. May remembering how Jesus has saved you fill you with joy—joy that cannot be taken away. He is our Redeemer; may we be more like Him. ❤
Do you know Jesus?
“Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things!”

Please pray (find the prayer sheet here):
- For those all over the world who are currently living under oppression, especially those in Northern Nigeria.
- That humanitarian aid would include spreading the Gospel, and that those receiving aid would continue to get stronger and healthier.
- That these charities would continue to flourish as they give aid to those who need it.
Thank you for your prayers!!
