“Fifty”: A Poem for Nigeria

Between 50-70 people were killed in a church service this past Sunday while celebrating Pentecost. This poem is for them.

Fifty.
Fifty family members
slipped through the cultural cracks
passed the divide, they can’t come back
And seemingly no one bats an eyelash.

Fifty men– with their children and wives
blood and bruises, they have lost their lives
and seemingly no US headlines will tell

Gone to hell? No,
singing Your praises, Father, under the church roof
They’re devoted to you Lord, their lives are the proof;
Lost because they love you.

Please,
Let us take note
and speak aloud,
of what they spoke:
fellowship, devotion,
loyalty, emotion
that cannot be surpassed.
They lie in tatters–
do they matter?
It’s something I
have to ask.
